Welcome to Maven Mahjong
Nashville’s hub for learning, playing, and connecting over the timeless game of Mahjong.
At Maven Mahjong, we believe in more than just mastering the game — we believe in building community, sparking joy, and creating meaningful connections. Whether you’re brand new to Mahjong or looking to sharpen your skills, we offer private and group lessons tailored to all experience levels. We also host gatherings and game nights where players can come together to play, laugh, and share in the fellowship that Mahjong inspires.
Join us to learn, laugh, and build lasting friendships — one tile at a time.
The Maven behind MM.
For Becca, it all started on a family beach vacation more than 20 years ago. What began as a casual lesson quickly became a favorite pastime — the clack of the tiles, the rhythm of the game, and the mix of strategy and chance made every session a joy. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon, surrounded by laughter, family, and fun.
Years later, during a casual get-together, Mahjong found its way back into Becca’s life when a friend pulled a set out of her bag. A quick rules refresher was all it took — she and her sisters were hooked all over again. From lunch break meet-ups to online late-night matches and weekend dinners that always end around the racks and mat, the obsession was reborn. And like all great passions, it begged to be shared.
Maven Mahjong grew from that rekindled love — a place where others can discover (or rediscover) the joy of the game and become part of a community that truly loves to play.
Why “Maven?”
Our name is inspired by the Yiddish word “maven,” meaning “expert” or “connoisseur.” It reflects both our love for the game and our desire to cultivate expertise in others. We want everyone who joins us to feel confident, welcomed, and empowered to become a Maven of Mahjong in their own right.
It’s also a nod to the deep connection between Mahjong and Jewish culture. In the 1930s, a group of Jewish American women formed the National Mah Jongg League, taking the ancient Chinese game and standardizing it into the American version played by millions today. As the league once shared:
“Mah Jongg has become a tradition — a legacy — passed from one generation to the next.”
The League’s work helped transform Mahjong into a beloved social ritual, and we’re proud to continue that tradition of learning, fellowship, and fun.
